we did get some emails from readers who had it work, but it sounds like it was very poorly executed on Carrs part. I'm sorry about the bad experience your friend had, I had no idea they would have such trouble with this promo or wouldn't have posted it!
I was excited about this offer and told a coworker about it since I did not have my Carrs card with me. We loaded her card up with the coupon, she went to the store and the cashier made a fuss saying they 'don't do that'. She even went to customer service with one box of each kind of oranges they had in the store and they would not honor it… did anyone have success with it?
I did not get my box of clementines at first. I then called the corporate office and they called the ER Carrs and squared things away. I went back in and got my money back for the Satsumas (the other kind that was available). So it was a nice deal and FREE

V – so sorry about the problems, thanks for alerting the rest of us before we went in…
Safeway is having tons of issues. Carr's doesn't have any clementines,only mandarin oranges, and they won't substitute. None of the employee's had any clue what offer I was talking about. I bought $40 worth of groceries and expected my oranges but they wouldn't do it. >:( I'm taking my food back, they are too expensive. Commissary is tons cheaper. On the phone with Safeway, on hold forever because TONS of people had the same problem.
